What Do the Wordle Colours Mean?

Short answer: Green = correct letter, right position. Yellow = correct letter, wrong position. Grey = letter not in the word.

The letter is in the word and in exactly the right position. Keep it there in every future guess. Example: if A is green in position 1, every future guess must start with A.

🟨 Yellow — Wrong position

The letter exists in the word but not in that position. Move it somewhere else on your next guess. Never place a yellow letter in the same spot twice.

⬛ Grey — Not in the word

A brand-new Wordle puzzle is released every day at midnight local time. There is exactly one puzzle per day — everyone worldwide plays the same word each day.

From February 2026, the New York Times began reintroducing older Wordle answers into the rotation. Words can now repeat — CIGAR was the first reused word. The gap between repeats is long.

No — Wordle answers are always common, uncapitalised English words. You will never see a country name, person name, or brand. This keeps the puzzle fair for all players.

Hard mode requires you to use all revealed hints in subsequent guesses. Any letter shown as green or yellow must be reused in the same or better position. It is significantly more challenging.
